The first action of the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification Period saw Great Britain's Jonathan Brownlee repeat the feat at the 2022 World Triathlon Cup Arzachena, leading from the early stages of the bike all the way to the tape.
It had been a four-man breakaway on the first of three draining climbs in the 30-degree heat, but only Tom Richard (FRA) could keep the pace up front across the run, eventually finishing third for a first World Cup podium after Brazil’s Manoel Messias had steamrolled his way into second with a lightening 5km. World Triathlon Multisport Explainer: Long-Distance Triathlon
Following the triathlon format of swim-bike-run, long-distance events are usually held over double or triple the length of the standard races. One major difference between standard and long-distance events is that Elite athletes are not allowed to draft on the bike, so many of the athletes come into the event from a strong cycling background.

2022 World Triathlon Championship Finals - Elite Men’s Highlights
The race could hardly have been any tighter and the result certainly could not have been any better for Leo Bergere of France, as a first Series gold of his career sealed a remarkable first world title. Standing third in the Maurice Lacroix World Rankings heading into the Championship Finals, he knew that only a win could put him close to the trophy. Even then, both Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde had the title in reach. In fact, both had a hand on the trophy, with 400m to go Wilde was champion until Matthew Hauser passed him, Yee was champion until Geens pulled clear into third.
But it was Bergere onto the front pack out of the water and driving the bike, even after the chasers closed in over the final laps, there was no catching him over the 10km run. USA’s Morgan Pearson was piecing together a phenomenal run of his own, scything through the field to hit second, Geens’ late surge to bronze preventing Yee from taking the title, Hauser’s fifth ahead of Wilde preventing the New Zealander doing the same.
