ITU is pleased to announce it has signed the Development Grant contract with the European Triathlon Union (ETU) for the year 2019.

“I am really proud and excited with this contract, that will allow, once more, to help the development of triathlon in all regions in Europe”, said ITU President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. “ETU’s plan for 2019 covers many different National Federations and projects, with a special focus on fostering the growth of National Federations and developing talent in athletes and coaches, which shows how connected ETU President Renato Bertrandi is with the development necessities of European nations.”

ETU President Renato Bertrandi presented a plan to use the funds offered by ITU to provide development camps in Cyprus and Serbia, as well as support for the Youth Triathlon Festival Camp in Slovenia, and four training sessions for the ETU Development Team.

After signing the agreement, Bertrandi said, “We have listened very carefully to the needs and the “wish list” from our National Federations, athletes, coaches and Officials in order to develop a comprehensive programme that covers as many areas as we can, and that will help to consolidate the work of our Development experts across the Continent. I would like once again to extend my deep gratitude to ITU for the continued support and faith in our work and I look forward to seeing our new athletes race in 2019 and onwards.”

ETU will give support to Belarus and Cyprus to help them organize the Youth Triathlon Festival Camp, and also to Bulgaria for a Talent identification camp. Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, FYR Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Romania and Slovenia will receive funding for some development projects, including TriGirls programmes, coaches education or the launch of the programme We are the Future, for kids of 14 years or younger.

The European Triathlon Union has also approved the calendar for the 2019 season, a packed 10 months period that will start in February 2019 with the Winter Triathlon European Championships in Cheile Gradistei (Romania) and will finish in October in the European Cup of Funchal (Madeira).

The European Championships of standard distance will take place in Weert (Nederlands) on May 31, while the Sprint distance one will be held in Kazan (Russia) in July 2019. The city of Targu Mures, in Romania, will host the second edition of the Multisport European Championships in June, while the U23 and Paratriathlon European Championships will be in Valencia (Spain) in September.

In 2019 Europe will have 13 European Cups, while the Juniors will compete in 16 European Junior Cups.
