British Triathlon Federation appoints new President

By British Triathlon Federation | 14 Dec, 2012

Ian Howard TD has been appointed as President of the British Triathlon Federation, taking over from Dr Sarah Springman CBE, who steps down after serving the maximum number of terms in post.
Ian has been involved in triathlon for many years and has been a regular competitor, winning a number of British Age-Group titles over the years.

More recently, Ian has been part of the Board that has led British Triathlon to two Sport Governing Body of the Year Awards in the last three years from the Sport Industry Group.  He served on the British Triathlon Board as Independent Non-Executive Director for Business Strategy advising the Board and Senior Management on business, legal, governance and strategic matters; as well as deputising for the Chair when necessary. Ian originally qualified as a solicitor, but has worked in industry in a variety of operational and corporate roles since the early eighties.

Within the sport, Ian has been a Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager and a triathlon club coach supporting local triathletes in the South East achieve their personal triathlon challenges. Ian has held a number of positions on committees including the British Triathlon Association Performance Committee and Elite Selection Committee.

Ian commented upon his appointment by the Board of British Triathlon: “I feel excited and honoured to be appointed as President and Chair of the British Triathlon Federation. I would like to pay tribute immediately to my predecessor Sarah Springman, without whom much of what we have achieved as a governing body would not have been possible.

“Moving forward after a successful Olympic Games in which triathlon has captured the enthusiasm of the country; we need to consolidate our pre-eminent position on the world stage and to start planning for Olympic and Paralympic success in Rio in 2016. Building for the future all starts at grass roots level and triathlon in England, Scotland and Wales is going from strength to strength. I hope we can work even more closely with the Home Nations in future, helping them to build participation and strengthening the performance pathways from their regional talent academies right up through our World-Class Programmes.”

Ian’s term of appointment is for four years, starting with effect from 1 January 2013.
