Roatan, Bay Islands The island of Roatan, the largest island of the Bay Islands in Honduras, has the privilege to host the Bay Islands Pan-American Cup Triathlon, for the fourth consecutive year. We are very interested in supporting this important sports event, and will do everything possible to make sure it grows and improves each year, said the new Mayor of Roatan, Mr. Dale Jackson.

The islanders are excited, and are getting ready to host about 250 triathletes from different parts of the world. The Island of Roatan has given the sport a very warm welcome, and about 100 volunteers are expected to come and help with the event on March 25, 2006.

We have several professional athletes already confirmed, and more will come, said event organizer, Leslie Poujol Brown. We are getting registrations on a daily basis, and I think this year we will reach our goal of 250 triathletes coming to the island, she added. Among the countries already confirmed are France, Canada, United States and some Central American countries.

This triathlon is considered among the most challenging, and equally beautiful in the ITU/PATCO calendar of the Americas. With the swim in crystal clear waters over coral gardens; the 18, 19 and 20 percent incline hills leaving the beach on the bike course; and a run on private roads, and shady trails overseeing the Caribbean waters; it is easy to understand why many triathletes are coming back year after year.

Host Hotel, Mayan Princess Hotel, has started preparations to host the start and finish lines of the race, plus the awards ceremonies. The official airline Taca Airlines, at www.taca.com, has given discounts of 20% off on all North American fares, including Toronto, out of Canada; and 30% discounts on Latin American airfares going to Honduras. To make things more convenient, the race management has teamed up with its travel partner, TropicalRez.com who has secured the best hotel rates on the island for the week of the event. We really want people to feel comfortable traveling to this little piece of paradise, said Leslie,  and we go out of our way to make sure everybody is well taken care of once they reach Honduras.

The organizers and sponsors of this race are working hard to make sure all ITU safety standards are met, while giving the event a very unique tropical flavor, and staying in touch with every aspect of nature that surrounds this incredible island.
