What a spectacular race!  The first race in the Nevis Cycle Club tri series at Oualie Beach was held November 26, 2005.  Mother Nature cooperated with beautiful weather, not too hot, fairly clear skies, and just a little wind.  The race was well run, tons of fun, had a great course, cheerful volunteers, good competition, and tasty post-race treats.  The race organizers Reggie, James, and Winston did a spectacular job.

The swim was a 250m (It think it was actually a bit longer than this) L-shaped.  The water was calm and warm, but a bit cloudy.  It seemed that all of the competitors tried to fit into the same starting area, and body contact was a factor during the beginning of the swim.  I started conservatively and slowly worked my way through the pack, ending up stoke for stoke with Reggie tied for the lead.  Reggie and I exited the water together, and he gave me a friendly pat on the back. What sportsmanship!  I took a split second to rinse off under the shower provided and was off to the transition area, which was on a grassy spot near the road.   I made quick work of T1 and was off on the bike.

The bike was a 10K out and back taking racers past the airport.  Overall the course was flat and fast, with the exception of a short, steep hill that was encountered right at the beginning and end.  During the bike I was passed by a few men, and after the turn around/water bottle exchange I got to see my female competition.  The other women were a bit behind, but not so far that I could relax.  I breezed through an uneventful T2 and headed out for the run.

The run was a 3K out and back using the same route as the bike course. This meant that same cruel hill again.  Otherwise the course was flat, with a slight down hill towards the finish.  I kept an honest pace, knowing the other women were behind me.  After the turn around/water stop, I saw my competition and had a chance to say hello to other racers.  I cruised into the finish, first overall female.

The post-race festivities were top notch.  Ice-cold water and tasty baked goods were available to the racers.  Awards consisted of Carib Brewery glasses and medals.  The organizers did a great job with this race and I can’t wait for the next one December 17th.  Race information and results can be found at www.neviscycleclub.com
