Canadian National Championships this Weekend in Kelowna, BC

By World Triathlon Admin | 13 Aug, 2005

The National Triathlon Championships will be held this weekend at the Apple Triathlon in Kelowna, BC.

On Saturday, August 20th, the Western Regional Kids of Steel Championships will take place, along with the 5th and final race in the Junior and U23 Development Series.  34 Junior Elite athletes will be competing.

This is a fantastic race and offers a great opportunity for our National Junior and U23 team to prepare for the Elite World Championships in Gamagori, Japan,  states Triathlon Canadas Executive Director, Alan Trivett.  The strength of this field will rival the field that our National athletes will face in Japan in September.  Canadas Junior Elite team selected to go to Gamagori was announced on Wednesday, August 10th.

The ITU International Challenge Race will be held on Sunday, August 21st, along with the National Triathlon Championships.  About 1,200 age-group athletes will be competing alongside 69 International Elite athletes, a record field for this race.

This is a very important race, as athletes are competing for 9 Age-Group Spots for the Age-Group World Triathlon Championships in Hawaii on October 9th, 2005.  Not only do the athletes have a chance to become the National Champion in their age-group, but they also have a chance to represent Canada at the most prestigious triathlon event of the year.

Its coming together really well, were really excited for the race, said Apple Triathlon President, Richard Montgomery.  Weve got a really good group of people, and the support of the community has expanded to accommodate these increased numbers.  This is a first-class event, we want to make sure everyone comes back!

This promises to be an exciting weekend in Kelowna.  For more information on the race and the complete list of athletes, please visit: www.appletriathlon.com.
