Age-group triathletes will have the opportunity to secure a spot on the same course as the world’s top Olympic-distance competitors in scenic San Diego. Registration opens at noon (PST) on Wednesday 12 October for the San Diego round of the 2012 ITU Triathlon World Championship Series, triathlon’s return to its birthplace.

Multisport athletes interested in competing in this world-class event - slated for May 12-13, 2012 - should visit http://sandiego.triathlon.org for more information and a link to register via the Active Network. Registration will be available for the sprint (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) and Olympic-distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) age-group events, as well as the Olympic-distance relay event.

Race-day action is scheduled to start on Saturday 12 May 2012, with the age-group Olympic-distance and relay races at 6:30am, followed by the sprint-distance event at 9:30am.

Pricing for age-group registration is as follows:

Registration Date Sprint Olympic Relay (teams of 3)
Oct. 12 - Dec. 31 $140 $195 $230
Jan. 1 - Feb. 29 $150 $210 $240
March 1 until sold out $160 $225 $250

Additionally, the San Diego ITU World Championship Series age-group sprint- and Olympic-distance races will serve as the 2012 USA Triathlon Club National Championship. Official USA Triathlon Clubs are eligible to compete for one of five national titles based on the club’s total membership size. Competition will also be offered in Military and Collegiate Club Divisions.

The Club National Championship is scored based on individual age-group performances. If an entrant is affiliated with an official USA Triathlon Club, a finish or top-10 showing in either the sprint- or Olympic-distance race will earn points for their club in the USA Triathlon Club National Championship competition.

Club Divisions

  • Division I: Over 250 members
  • Division II: 249-130 members
  • Division III: 129-89 members
  • Division IV: 88-30 members
  • Division V: 29-2 members

The elite events are the second of two qualifiers to determine the men’s and women’s 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. The event also will play a key role in determining the Olympic squads for a number of other nations, as it is the second-to-last WCS event prior to the closing of the 2012 Olympic qualification window at the end of next May.

One-hundred and fifty of the world’s fastest triathletes - 75 elite men and 75 elite women - will compete in the World Championship Series race contested at Mission Bay. The venue is adjacent to Fiesta Island, which hosted the world’s first-ever triathlon on 15 September 1974.

USA Triathlon will produce the event alongside the Hamburg, Germany-based UpSolut Sports AG and Lagardère Unlimited. The San Diego Sports Commission, the City of San Diego and the Triathlon Club of San Diego have partnered with USA Triathlon to assist in bringing this world-class event to the city.
